Drum processing tip 1You can get great results from shaping your drums and then adding a compressor to glue them together. I will show you below on how we do this. We start off by using a simple drum loop, (see Drum Loop House) on how we do this. with the simple 4 bar loop in place we can now hear what it sounds like without any processing below. For this example I am using the SPL TD and the API 2500 compressor, First we add the SPL TD this and as you can see reducing the Attack to -9 with the Sustain pulled up to +15. In the audio example below you can hear what this is doing to shape our drums. Using this we can now shape the drums further and here I am using a 4:1 Ratio with a attack time of 1-ms quite a quick attack time, and with the release set to a manual setting of around 650-ms. Below you can hear the over all result of the drums. Overall this is a great staring point, It makes your drums sound fuller, with the sustain set to the level it is and taming the attack reducing the peaks, It gives you a great foundation into getting started with your track.
